Sweetheart Bakery in Billings Joins The Strike

I stopped by Sweetheart Bakery on Midland road yesterday afternoon to see what the strike was all about. I arrived to cheers from the 7 or 8 on “strike shift”. They all seemed in great spirits as they held picket signs.
The Sweetheart workers take shifts 24/7 holding the “On Strike’ signs. They have a food and beverage table and a couple of fire pits going for heat.
The company has been trying to find a buyer and reorganize but has had no luck.
I read this in the Independent Record:
On Friday, the bakers union called the strike a protest of a “horrendous contract.” The bakers object to more wage cuts and a lack of participation in new pension plans, according to the Journal. The bakers union said liquidation is the best way to save jobs at some bakeries by breaking up Hostess, so the individual plants may be sold off.
John Maraz, representing Sweetheart Bakery strikers will join the Billings Morning news this morning at about 8:20 to explain what is going on and how things have been developing since the strike began on the evening of November 10th. The Sweetheart Bakery stores in Billings remain open!
