Only Once in a Blue Moon!

No doubt you have heard the term “Once in a Blue Moon”. It’s something we say as an indication of a rare event. But did you know it’s actually a real astronomical term? It’s when a full moon occurs twice a month and August is one of those months!
On Friday, August 31 look up at the sky and check out a blue moon! The first full moon this month was on August 2. Keep in mind though that the moon won’t actually be blue unless some atmospheric dust or ash just happens to create that tinge of celestial color. It will look just like any other full moon. Better catch this one because the next blue moon won’t happen again until July 2015!
